First Billhooks Game - Haut-Dijon versus Bavetta.

Haut-Dijon knights.  These got absolutely pasted by their opposite number.

A few photos from my first game of Never Mind the Billhooks with my wargames buddy, Phil.  His well-established blog is here at Phil's War Cabinet.  He also includes a report on our game.

Phil and I are quite taken by the 'imagi-nations' idea.  His force is the army of the Duchy of Bavetta (based on a an Italian Condottieri army) and mine is the army of the Duchy of Haut-Dijon (which, surprisingly, some say resembles an Burgundian army!) led by Charles the Reckless and his brother, Antoine the Grand Bastard  of Haut-Dijon.  These will occasionally be supported by their allies from the Duchy of Saveloy.

The battlefield.  Bevatta on the right, Haut-Dijon on the left.

Look along the Bavettan lines.

Kaboom! Phil's first dice roll for his artillery.

We took it slowly as we were both learning the rules.  In fact, we only played through one turn - but such a lot happen.  We're sure that errors of interpretation occurred but, overall, the flow of the game was good and the rules are not that complicated (nor fiddly!).  We played the core rules (none of yer fancy Helvetia or Italia theatre rules at this stage!

Mercenary pikemen in the employ of Bavetta.  Beautifully painted by Phil.

Push of pike. The Haut-Dijon pikemen came out of this slightly better.

Whilst the crossbowmen (nearest unit) didn't even get a shot off, we both learned the power of massed archery.  Two paired archer units loosed off 48 shots and the opposing unit of knights ceased to exist (see the horse casualties in the foreground).  I think we were both somewhat surprised about exactly how devastating the arrow-storms can be.  Maybe I won't get that 100 Years' War French army!
